NAEP Mathematics Standing Committee Meeting in Washington, D.C.
November 16-19, 2011

Picture

The NAEP Mathematics Standing Committee meeting was held November 17-19, 2011 in Washington, D.C..  Our math team analyzed pilot question data, revised question rubrics, and discussed which questions should become operational items on the next NAEP assessment and which should not.  It was a VERY busy three days, and we worked a lot of hours.  Analyzing questions and programs is something I love to do, however.  Our team was comprised of three people who work in the area of elementary curriculum (one from Washington, D.C., one from Iowa and one from Kentucky) and one college professor from Indiana.  Others  who guided or listened in on our discussions because of their affiliation with NAEP were two from the Pearson Education group (responsible for leading the scoring of NAEP assessments), one from the National Governing Board (the national board that oversees the national assessment), and two from the ETS Company (the company that oversees NAEP assessment item development).

At Greenville Elementary School Character Counts!  We believe that character education is a very important part of our students' education as it tanscends all socio-economic boundaries.  Character Counts! has grown over the past several years at GES to include the Character Counts! store, as well as the Blackhawk Hideout Cafe for those students displaying good character.  Character Counts! has been recognized as the number one character education program in the nation.  The six pillars of the Character Counts! program are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.  Greenville Elementary promotes one pillar of character per month as scheduled by the district.

Each year Greenville Elementary has a theme to promote school spirit.  Past school-wide themes have included Mission Possible, GES Idol, Players On and Off the Field, and  Proficiency in Paradise.  The 2011-2012 theme is "Hollywood."  During the opening week of school, all faculty and staff dress in theme attire.  During the weeks of the administration of the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress, all students, faculty and staff dress to match the school theme.  Mr. Hill and Mr. Freeman are shown grilling for last year's school luau.  Dennis Wilkins is in the background.

Murray EDU 400 Mathematics Practicum Class

One of the requirements of the Murray EDU 400 practicum students is to complete a 20 hour practicum experience in both reading and mathematics.  Many children do not have anything to do during Fall break, so some of the Hopkins County students sign up to participate in Reading/Math Round-Up.  Reading/Math Round-up is held at Pride Elementary School.  The EDU 400 students assume the role of teacher throughout the week.  Reading is taught the first half of the day, and math is taught the second half of the day.  Students are able to complete all 40 practicum hours during the week of Hopkins/Muhlenberg Countys' Fall breaks.  During the 2010-2011 school year, Dotiki Mine in Hopkins County sponsored the event.
